A long, rounded black stone hangs beneath a hand-beaded bronze top, creating a simple contrast between the smooth surface of the onyx and the intricate glass beadwork above it.

There is an Art Deco sensibility here, but not in the sense of reproducing a piece from the 1920s. We are interested in the geometry of the period: defined shapes, repetition, black against warm metal, and enough structure for the jewelry to hold its own against simple clothes.

That is also why these earrings do not need to be saved for evening. A black onyx drop can work just as naturally with a white shirt, knitwear or denim as it does with a black dress.

When onyx becomes the accent

Onyx appears differently in our Gold Edge pieces.

It is easy to miss this when looking only at their names. Vintage Czech glass remains the defining bead material, while stones such as onyx introduce natural variation into those more ordered constructions.

The result is jewelry that can be detailed when viewed closely without becoming difficult to wear.

That distinction matters to us. We do not design jewelry around the idea that an elaborate piece requires an elaborate occasion. The intention is for a distinctive earring or bracelet to become part of someone's normal wardrobe.

Handmade onyx jewelry from Mexico City

Every Atelier Lirio onyx piece is made by hand in our Mexico City studio.

A piece typically requires around 8–9 hours of hand-weaving, beading and finishing. The semiprecious stones are selected from suppliers in Mexico, and vintage Czech glass beads appear throughout the collection.

Unless a product description states otherwise, metal components are finished with 18K gold plating, while selected beads feature 24K gold plating.

We produce in small batches, with most styles available in quantities of only one to three pieces.

Caring for black onyx jewelry

Onyx is durable, but an Atelier Lirio piece combines stone with materials such as vintage glass, plated metal and hand-woven beadwork. Caring for the whole piece is therefore more important than caring for the stone alone.

• Wipe rather than scrub. Use a clean, dry, soft cloth to remove dust and body oils.

• Keep it away from water and chemicals. Remove the jewelry before bathing or swimming, and avoid direct contact with perfume and lotion.

• Handle it with dry hands. This helps preserve both plated surfaces and beadwork.

• Store it separately. Keeping the piece in its Atelier Lirio box helps prevent unnecessary rubbing against other jewelry.
